Determine Autopsy Needs for Unexpected Death
An Autopsy is a medical procedure that determines a cause of death.
When a death is unexpected, a Forensic Autopsy may be required by state law.
Authorities will ask a series of questions to determine if the procedure is necessary.
If it is, they will coordinate with the local Coroner or medical examiner.

- If an Autopsy is required, an open casket may still be possible
- If the deceased's religion objects to an Autopsy, speak with authorities about additional options
- A family member or Executor of the state may need to authorize the procedure
- Once complete, the body will be available to a Funeral Home or for other end-of-life arrangements
