Homeowners and Auto Insurance

Managing a deceased person's homeowners and auto insurance depends on who may be taking on the property and policies.

If another person is also listed on the insurance policy (ex: surviving spouse), then contact the insurance provider to report the death and confirm the other person is allowed to maintain the policy.

If property has been left to someone (ex: surviving spouse, or Beneficiaries named in a Will, but that person is not named on the policy, then:

  • Notify the insurance provider of the death

  • Request that the policy remain in effect to avoid a lapse in coverage

  • Additionally request that the policy be rewritten for a surviving family member

If no surviving family member will take over the policy, then:

  • Notify the insurance provider of the death

  • Have the Executor of the Estate or Administrator ask that coverage continue through the full length of Probate

  • When Probate is complete, and the home has been sold or inherited by a surviving family member or Beneficiary, have the new homeowner contact the insurance provider to close the old policy and open a new one under a new name

See the below links for contact information to the most common insurers in the United States.

Note: if there are any outstanding payments, do not pay them directly.

The surviving family, Beneficiary or Executor of the Estate should not pay for any overdue bills or debt incurred by the deceased.

These final bills should only be paid for by using money from the Estate during Probate.

For more information about final debt payments during Estate Settlement, review items within the Estate checklist.
