The surviving spouse, child, or parent of a service member who died in the line of duty, or who died from a service-related injury or illness, may be eligible for benefits from a few different Veterans benefits programs:

- Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) -- if the veteran died while in the service or service-related disability, received or was entitled to receive Veterans Administration (VA) compensation
- Wartime Service Pension -- an annual pension for surviving families with low annual income
- Burial Allowance -- reimbursement for burial or Funeral expenses if not reimbursed from another source
However, all honorably discharged veterans are eligible for:
- Burial in a national veterans cemetery
- Free headstone and marker
- Burial flag
- Presidential memorial certificate
